Week #5 The Field is White, Ready For Harvest

Greetings from Santiago, Chile!!!!!

Things are great here!  My mission is super ghetto, but perfect.  The sector(area) I`m in is one of the wealthier areas though.  My trainer`s name is Elder Peck.  He is a super nice guy. He is from Pocatello, Idaho.  He has been out six months and has been in this sector the entire six months.  My first day,  we had a lot of orientation, got assigned companions, more orientation, got a pillow, dropped our stuff off at the house, and went to work!!  It was an amazing best day.  We started WALKIN!  (Drake)

We went to a park and immediately my comp asked me to start a conversation with this group of people.  It was a  dad, his probably 20 something year olf daughter, and her son.  She said that the Dad isn`t around.  We talked about how the gospel blesses families and that with the gospel, her son, even without his father, would havea great understanding of who our Heavenly Father is and what it means to be a father.  Then, my companion told me to share the message of the restoration, so I handed them a pamphlet. I told them about Joseph Smith and his circumstances, and how he prayed to God about what to do.  Then, I said the first vision.  I explained that because of his faith and his willingness to act on his faith, Heavenly Father answered his question.  And that that was Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ that appeared to him.  He said "Wow, that`s amazing."  I told him that He too could feel the blessings of the gospel and that he would recieve an answer too if he will pray with a sincere heart and an intent to act upon his answer....It was a super great way to start the mission.

We taught a lesson later on with a boy named Axxx.  He is 17 and the only person in his family listening.  We read a chapter from 1st Nephi with him.  We then talked with him about how it is solely necessary to do three things to have a closer relationship with Christ and Heavenly Father....First, Pray every morning when you wake up and when you go to bed. Second, read the Book of Mormon daily, even if it`s just one verse. And third, go to church.  We talked about the importance of these three elements in the gospel.  I testifed of the power of prayer and that I know that he and his family and his friends would all receive blessings if he would do these things.  We also talked about how this would affect his kids...he said that this would help his kids have a sturdy foundation in their home.  We challenged him to do these things.  He agreed.  I threw out an idea of playing soccer to read a chapter in the Book of Mormon the next time we are there....we rotate at goalie and if you get scored on, then you have to read a verse and explain how that is important of how that can help us in our life.
The last real big lesson was with a man named Vxxxxx.  He is 30 years old and lives with one of his friends.  They are both members of the church, but are less active.  We read a chapter with Victor.  We talked about how this is important.  Many of the prophets wrote that they couldn`t write everything that they were revealed.  That means that what they did include, they felt was important, so it`s essential to consider every chapter, and every verse as something vital.  He agreed with that and said that he`d work at breaking things down more.  We talked also about how important it is for him to go to church so that he can feel the spirit.  I promised him that if he would do that one thing, he would experience miracles in his life.
Last, I went to the bishop`s house to meet him.  He is a really friendly guy.  He jokes a lot and his family is super awesome.  His name is Bishop Contreras.  We just talked about life in general and about the church.  He asked me about my family and what they thought about the church and me being on a mission.  He also asked what my hopes are for my mission...I told him three things. One, that I will learn to develop Christlike attributes and grow closer to Christ.  Two, that I would be blessed to be able to touch the lives of the Chileans.  And three, that my family would come to know the fullness of the gospel and feel the love of our Heavenly Father in their lives.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to be here.  Though they tell us that this is one of the hardest missions in the world, though they tell us that this is THE most dangerous mission in South America and one of the most dangerous in the world, though some people laugh at us and judge us, and though the living conditions are below what we as Americans can imagine living in,  I love it.  I`ve been here for about a day now, and I already love it!  The people, the houses, the culture, my companion, my roomates, and most importantly, this gospel.  This IS the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Through this, people will return to the father and experience joy, happiness, and peace in their lives.  The Chileans are my family, all of them.  I have such a love for these people, and especially the kids.  You think it`s cute to see a cute kid say something in English, wait till you hear a kid that lives in a shack with trash everywhere tell you in Spanish, that life is great and that the love the Lord.  My heart goes out to these people and I cannot wait for the experiences that await me in the great unknown of South Santiago.
I love all of you.  I apologize, but I couldn`t bring my camera with me, so no pics this week, but I have a ton for next time.
Con todo la amor en mi corozon,
Elder Jackson

Week #4 September 16, 2014

Hello All!!!

My week was really good!  The Spanish continues to get better every day! It´s funny though because I am like learning Spanish and forgetting English!  Haha

This week, my companion and I went to a park to do some prosilyting, we talked to this one girl for thirty minutes about her life and about her beliefs...etc.  She is an atheist, but is open to ideas.  She was really receptive to what we had to say!  She laughed at my southern accent and helped me with my Spanish.  Lol.  After talking to her for like fifteen minutes, she was like...I speak English?  I was like, NO WAAAY!!  haha.  We ended up getting her information, showing her on a map where the church was and when it starts, and turning her info in for the field missionaries to take over.  Her name is Cxxxx Cxxxx. This was a very spiritual experience...it felt soooo good to actually teach  real people and not fake investigators.  This was Wednesday.

Thursday was 9/11, so it was a sentimental day for me as well as the Chileans.  That was the day that they fought for their indapendence from the dictator, so things were pretty crazy.  They wouldn´t let us leave the MTC because if the wrong person sees you on that day and knows you´re american, they´ll hurt you.  It´s because they blame us for them having a dictator in the first place....kinda weird.

Then Friday, we went out on splits with field missionaries...my companions name is Elder White.  He is a good ole boy from Idaho.  We got along really well.  He has been out for 18 months and just became a zone leader.  We went walking in the streets to go to a certain guys house...we contacted severaly people.  The first guy we talked to basically just ragged on other churches, but didn´t want to hear our message.  The next lady´s name was Mariah.  We talked to her for a minute at her gate, and then asked to have a lesson with her, and she let us in.  We sat on the front porch and talked to her about how the gospel has blessed her life.  She is a strong believer in Christ, but has problems with a lot of the churches.  We told her a little about her church and asked her if we could come back...she enthusiasttically agreed.  She asked me to say the closing prayer...super awesome experience...my first prayer in Spanish outside of the MTC!! :D  Upon her reccomendation, we went to the house across the street to talk to a family.  A young boy answered, his name was Byrun.  We talked to him for a minute and then he invited us inside.  After opening with a prayer, his sister walked in...we invited her to the lesson and after some coaxing agreed.  Her name is Nicol and she is 20 years old.  Their family is seperated and they live with their dad.  We talked to them about how the gospel blesses families in many different ways.  After that, I felt that I needed to share my testimony.

I told them that though my family isn´t members of the church, the gospel has blessed my family in subtle ways.  If for nothing else, that it brought my family together for my baptism and for my farewell.  They didn´t say anything and thought about it for a good thirty seconds.  Then, we got a return appointment, prayed, and left.  We went to the boy´s house that we initially wanted to go to...he walked up right after we got there.  His name was Miguel.  He was very nice.  We didn´t really have time to talk, but we setup a time for my comp to come back and he gave us some water because it´s starting to get hot here.
Not sure what's happening

Megabed3 Third Continent!!!!

The streets are crazy here right now because of indapendence day...there are people selling a million different things! Also, I got to ride a public bus and a metro for the first time! Pretty dang awesome!  There was a lot of grafitti in the metro station.

Other than all of this, my life is just classes and Spanish here.  I am finally at the point where I can sit with the Latinos at meals and make jokes with them.  One of the Hermanas here reeeeeaaally likes bread, so we call her Hermana Pan( Sister Bread). HAHA  She is from Costa Rica and plays on the University of Costa Rica´s women´s soccer team...she´s pretty good. I started playing goalie in the mornings at soccer because there are so many people now...I´ve still got it! ;)

I hope all is well, and i can´t wait to hear from everyone next week!! :)) Last week at the MTC! I leave next Tuesday morning!

September 9, 2014 Week 3 at the MTC

Alan,

I´m definitely carb loading here at the MTC! lol  Every meal has either rice or mashed potatoes with a roll.  They are so good when they´re fresh.

Not a whole lot happened this week, but a ton of learning...learning more spanish and learning how to teach better.  I bore my testimony in Spanish this Sunday...it was amazing.  I had multiple people come up and thank me for it and told me that it was truly inspirational and that they felt the spirit.  This included the MTC president, President Doll.

I´m starting to get pretty fluent in Spanish,  but I still have a ton to learn.  I pray for you all each and every day.  I hope all is well.  Can´t wait to hear from yall next week!

Elder Jackson
P.S- That´s not good enough for Arkansas....I expect 100 points in that game...Nicholas State??  That´s like Gurdon High School!

September 2, 2014 MTC

Alan,
It is super awesome here!  I am finally getting to the point that I can hold conversations and teach lessons in Spanish.  Right now, I´m working on memorizing the First Vision in Spanish....the spirit is so strong during it.  There are several of the guys in my district that have said that I for sure have the gift of tongues… I don´t really know exactly how to tell if you have it or not, but I can tell you that I know way more Spanish right now than I did in my two years of Spanish in high school...btw, no mi digas means something completely different in Chilean!  Haha.

I´m not going to email a bunch today that way I have time to upload a bunch of my pictures!  I didn´t have time last week.

That sucks about Arkansas, but is typical.  I hope they start doing well soon.  There is a guy in my district that I have talked about moving in with in Provo after the mission...his name is Elder Despain.  He is a great guy.  He is from San Ramon, California.  Then there is another guy in my district named Elder Roper who said that he could hook me up with a job in construction in Provo....so things are looking pretty good as far as a move in the near future!

The other guys are pretty good at futbol, but nobody tries as hard as they can since we don´t keep score, so it´s kinda hard to say how good they are.

What happened to the shirts....they have black marks on them from what I´m guessing is the dryer.  The lady that does them here for sure doesn´t bleach them because it kinda comes out when I use my bleach pen.  It´s not like a big deal, but it kinda sucks that I spent good money on the shirts, and now they´re marked up.

I did get a haircut....it wasn´t supposed to be short, but we had an accident...so it´s basically back to normal.  Lol Sorry Brother Nock, but I am growing it out again!

I weighed myself two days ago and have lost 11 pounds so far...no more sushi and steak!  Haha.  I do kinda watch what I eat because of all of the carbs and I don´t really eat desert, but I do enjoy it some.  The only drinks they have are soda, but I just get water. :)
Well, I gotta go! Love and miss yall!
Love,

Elder Jackson
